Freda’s Soup Kitchen is a Detroit-based culinary brand dedicated to comfort, wellness, and community impact. Founded by Co-founder & CEO Cathy “Freda” Wilkins, the kitchen was born out of compassion and ingenuity during the height of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

When Detroit market shoppers began seeking natural ways to strengthen their immune systems, Freda started offering homemade, immunity-boosting teas. Soon after, customers began asking for soups — something warm, nourishing, and healing. One Saturday, she prepared a single pot of soup and sold out completely. Not a drop remained. That moment sparked a movement.

Within a year, Freda’s Soup Kitchen was officially established after Freda had personally served hundreds of Detroiters throughout the pandemic, providing not only food but comfort and connection in uncertain times.

A native Detroiter, Freda is a proud graduate of Detroit Public Schools and an alumna of Langston University (B.A. in Education, Science) and Wayne State University (M.Ed. in Education). Her career spans roles as a National Science Specialist, educator, inventor, and NASA collaborator, bringing scientific precision and creative innovation to every recipe she develops.

Today, Freda’s Soup Kitchen stands as both a tribute to Detroit’s resilience and a symbol of nourishment through purpose — serving handcrafted, locally inspired soups that feed the body and lift the spirit.
